Hurricane Alicia lashed Texas coast with 115 mph winds tearing through towns and leaving five dead in the Houston area. Galveston suffered millions in damage while power was cut islandwide. by afternoon it weakened to a tropical storm as it moved away from Houston.
Drought battered southeast Iowa saw relief as storms hit Burlington with 2.5 inches of rain reported in parts and winds up to 52 mph. Police logged street flooding and scattered outages while trees fell and temperatures fell from 102 to 85. Strong thundershowers also touched Fairfield Mount Pleasant. Cedar Rapids hit 95.
The Cedar Rapids Harnischfeger Corp. plant will resume operations Monday as a one shift operation with about 70 percent of the pre shutdown hourly workers, roughly 224 of 320, returning. Salaried staff will also return except those directly affected by the reduced manufacturing.
Moscow reports Andropov meets nine U.S. senators and calls for eliminating existing anti satellite weapons and banning new ones. Senator Claiborne Pell says the talks offer limited optimism and raises questions about the shuttle’s status and enforcement. Analysts call the move potentially a ploy to slow planned U.S. tests.
Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger announced a planned three day trip to Central America September 6 to 8 to observe El Salvador Honduras and Panama and to meet with officials and U S troops He credited U S training for improvements while noting no planned changes to trainer levels though a possible expansion of a military medical unit He declined specifics on fighting in Nicaragua while signaling optimism about Salvadoran government progress.
