Rockwell Collins Avionics Group Lays Off Thirty Workers

About thirty salaried employees from Rockwell Collins Avionics Group in Cedar Rapids were laid off, affecting personnel, graphics services and manufacturing. Company says the move is necessary due to weak primary commercial markets through fiscal year 1984, with more salaried cuts possible as planning for 1984 concludes.

Airport execs meet in Cedar Rapids for Great Lakes chapter event

The 13th annual Great Lakes Chapter meeting of the American Association of Airport Executives opens in Cedar Rapids at Stouffer's Hotel. About 250 attendees are expected, with speakers Murray Smith of the FAA and Mel Volz of United Airlines. A balloon departure is planned this evening. The event supports 13 Midwestern states and runs for three days.

Adult workshop at Mount Mercy College aims at non traditional students

Cedar Rapids Harnischfeger laid off worker leads trail work

Wayne Moon of Cedar Rapids, laid off from Harnischfeger, hauls rock along a new recreation trail in northeast Cedar Rapids. About nine unemployed workers are hired under a federal jobs program to build the three fourths mile McCloud Run Trail, started July 20 and due for completion in early September. The route will start at J Avenue and end at 29th Street NE with a playground at the beginning.

Linn County defends road oil response after tainted spill

Linn County Supervisor Joe Rinas defended county staff actions after recycled oil spread on three roads contaminated by styrene and naphthalene. Health officials tested the oil and noted odor levels, while state agencies discussed potential action pending assessments of health risk and possible evacuation.
