After two rain filled days the All-Iowa fair saw sun and crowds return with Eastern Iowans flocking to Hawkeye Downs. By mid fair, 70,772 had entered, about 16,000 fewer than last year as Midwest Championship rodeo opened a four day run.
The program lists a busy Thursday with events starting 7:30 p m Garrison band concert and 8 p m Midwest Championship rodeo. Hereford judging at 9 a m followed by junior livestock judging for Aberdeen Angus Hereford and Shorthorn steers and market hogs. Garden flower show judging at 10 a m with 1 p m junior livestock market lamb judging and a second rodeo at 2 p m. Talent Time finals at 7:30 p m followed by Cedar Rapids Moose girls drum and bugle corps parade and dancing acts titled Dancing Waters on stage.
After four days the fair needs over 104000 more visitors Thursday through Sunday to match the 1953 attendance record of 175454. Gate counters logged 12447 on Wednesday as officials, wary of rain, remained optimistic. Over 3000 watched the Thursday rodeo in the grandstand with more rodeos slated Friday and Saturday. among competitors are Whitey Anderson Bill Keller and Bob Campbell from Cedar Rapids.
The League of Women Voters conducts a straw ballot at the All-Iowa fair booth. Voters cast results showing totals for Hoegh and Herring in the governor race and Martin and Giletts in the U.S. Senate race with figures noted.
Dale Cochran of Solon is home on navy leave as Cedar Rapids cowboys compete in a Wednesday rodeo go around on the Downs track soaked by over two inches of rain. Anderson places fourth in saddle bronc while riders, ropers and bulldoggers battle slick footing before about 1,800 fans. The Garrison high school band performed with the Hendricks family, top Western entertainment, unable to complete all acts.
Special to The Gazette reports Bernice Bonesteel 41 of 4001 Old Marion Rd NE died in a 9:30 a.m. crash at the new two way stop junction of highways 30 and 261 in Mt. Vernon. Witnesses say she pulled into the truck’s path. truck driver Richard Gage 23 of Prairie City says he struck her car at about 45 mph. Bonesteel operated Bernice Studio of Music at 841 Fourth Ave SE and was a 1949 Coe College BA graduate. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. W. F. Douda and Mrs. E. E. Newton.
The widow of Albert F Hodges of Pasadena sues Century Engineering Corp in Dubuque federal court seeking 100000 damages for his death in an Aug last year aboard an F 94 aircraft. She alleges a faulty ejector mechanism caused the canopy and Hodges to be ejected 60 feet, killing him. She also seeks interest and costs.
Waterloo police report Lee Phillips 15 drowned in swift Cedar River currents while fishing. James Robinson survived after being pulled from danger by railroad switchman H D Hunter who rescued him. Phillips body later recovered by firemen.
French Premier Mendes-France warned at a six nation meeting that rejection of his revision proposals could trigger a leftist crisis akin to the pre war Popular Front. He said parliament would debate the treaty Aug 28 and suggested crisis could benefit the Russians.
Dag Hammarskjold named Nobel laureate Ralph Bunche as undersecretary and deputy at the United Nations, creating seven undersecretary posts. The move places Bunche as the highest American U N post since the body’s founding with duties including goodwill promotion and Cold War diplomacy.
The defense department charges China is detaining 15 US air force flyers as political prisoners in violation of international law and the Korean armistice. It says prisoners were prevented from repatriation and used as bargaining points, with Capt. Harold Fischer of Swea City, Iowa named among them.
A second reading was given to a proposed ordinance changing traffic summonses to require the violator's signature instead of posting bond. A failure to appear would trigger a second misdemeanor charge with up to 100 dollars fine or 30 days in jail. City attorney C W Garbers on urged convenience for violators and officers. ordinance modeled on state traffic law.
Secretary of State Dulles was reported to consider a short stop in Japan on the return trip next month from the conference in the Philippines on southeast Asia.
Evanston AP Charles P. Taft addressed delegates to the World Council of Churches gathering from 163 denominations in 48 nations. He praised U S social legislation and reform heritage, linking religious background to policy like social security minimum wage and public housing, and defended American capitalism against cartel tendencies. Taft lives in Cincinnati and is a delegate to the assembly.
Alvide de Gasperi the veteran Italian statesman who guided Italy from postwar chaos to democracy died at 73 in his northern Italy retreat of a heart attack. He led Italy as premier from 1945 to 1953 guiding anti-communist policy and Western alignment including NATO joining and European integration efforts.
The Senate approved 79 to 0 and the House 265 to 2 a bill to strip the Communist party of legal rights and require member registration or face jail. The measure labels the party a criminal conspiracy and imposes penalties including fines and imprisonment for willful members.
A Des Moines poll by Wallaces' Farmer and Iowa Homestead magazine found most Iowa farm people view Sen. McCarthy as doing more harm than good. The results show 46 percent harm, 18 percent good, 27 percent not paying attention, and 9 percent undecided, with schooling level widening the gap.

Police recovered the body of 9 year old Jimmy Berrian from the Coconut Grove Yacht Basin after a water contest with another boy. Witnesses said the pair tried to see who could stay underwater longer during the incident.
President Eisenhower told a Republican day crowd in Springfield that the country is sick of crooked politics and doom talk. He urged voters to back Illinois Republicans in Congress and strengthen the state’s House delegation. He dined with Gov Stratton and senate hopeful Joseph Meek and recalled Lincoln’s tale of a crooked fence to critique Democratic critics.
Humid air and higher temperatures persist in Iowa through Friday as fog reduces visibility after heavy rains. Cedar Rapids reported a 2:30 p.m. temperature of 82 and an overnight low of 64, with mid to high 80s forecast tomorrow. Fast rising Indian Creek flooded parts of Cedar Rapids Country Club and Marion baseball field, but creeks began receding within their banks on Thursday.
British foreign office said Mrs. MacLean American born wife of vanished diplomat Donald MacLean wrote a letter from Cairo to her Paris based mother. She says she and her three children are well and happy after months unreported since last September amid the Burgess MacLean disappearance.
