Initial small human trials may begin by October in six centers, with half receiving vaccine and half placebo. Safety evaluation could last six months, followed by longer efficacy testing. five years to possible general approval. MicroGeneSys uses AIDS coat proteins inserted into a harmless virus to provoke antibodies, while other labs pursue varied approaches amid viral coat drift that complicates vaccine development.
