Crews, including Iowa Electric Light and Power, worked to restore service as trees blocked lines and widespread outages were reported. Local sheriffs noted scattered damage but limited severe impact elsewhere.
A Northwest Airlines plane with at least 146 aboard crashed on takeoff from Detroit Metropolitan Airport, erupting in a fireball near a freeway overpass. Authorities said there appeared to be no survivors. FBI searched for possible prior explosion while hospital sources described multiple burned victims and ground casualties.
