Turner Charges Assembly Can't Hire Lawyers
NES MOINES AP Two legislative lawyers who wrote an opinion that contradicted Attorney General Turner are allegedly illegally employed by the general assembly. Turner told a legislative study committee that only state agencies outside his office may hire attorneys such as the commerce commission transportation regulation board and employment security commission. He said senate legal counsel Steven Cross and house legal counsel Dan Dudley were told last spring to find a way around the attorney general's ruling that legislators cannot serve on executive boards and commissions. Cross said he was asked to use his best legal judgment in drafting the opinion. Senate committee chairman Sen. Gene Glenn questioned whether the ban on ill lawyers applies to the legislature.
