Memphis mayor seeks taxpayer vote on police fire wage strike
Memphis Mayor Wyeth Chandler proposes a settlement to end a walkout by police and firemen. The plan requires return to work, then both sides present best offers to a federal mediator. If the mediator sides with the city, no further action is needed. If the union plan wins, a citywide referendum would be held.

Fire at Rock Island building in yards ruled accidental
Cedar Rapids firefighters say the Aug. 3 blaze in the Rock Island Railroad yards destroyed a large building once housing the Rock Island Motor Transit Company and believe it started probably by accident by unknown persons. Six extinguishers were used in the area and may indicate an attempted suppression before rekindling or an out of control fire. Black smoke rose over Cedar Rapids and could be seen from about 30 miles away.

Testimony Opens in $1.5 Million Fire Insurance Suit
In Linn District Court the trial of Walter and (Mrs.) Kulish seeks reimbursement from MFA Insurance for a March 22 1977 fire at their former 4403 Loraine St NE residence. The couple claim 34850 in damages plus 1.5 million alleging MFA indicated one spouse started the blaze. Their six year old son Mark testified he set the fire with a cigarette lighter. MFA contends evidence suggests the fire started away from the sofa and that an eyeball investigation without an official kit did not support the bag start theory. The Kulish attorney cited Capt. Phillip Saunders as determining the blaze began near the sofa, MFA countered the finding did not fit the scene. The insurer suggested motive involving finances and drinking quarrels. the Kulish side noted possible accelerants were found. The boy testified he lit the bag to discard old toys. He admitted memory gaps about school and birthday but recalled his teacher. Testimony to resume later today.
