Diana Nyad undertakes a 103 mile crossing from Cuba to the United States while a competing woman swimmer seeks a share of the spotlight with her own marathon attempt. The report notes other features on pages 9A and 11A.
Lifestyles editor Ken Sullivan stresses advance planning to avoid shocks when Medicare benefits end. The piece appears on page 10A alongside Dear Abby and other items. Memphis fire fighters and police officers walk off. National Guardsmen in jeeps and armored carriers arrest 74 striking officers for breach of the peace and curfew violations. Curfew maintained 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. as officials say normal calls continue and city calm is restored.
In a congressional hearing Ralph David Abernathy testified that King seemed troubled and nervous before his 1968 Memphis killing. He believed the assassination was political and possibly a conspiracy, though he had no direct knowledge of a threat. The inquiry continues with James Earl Ray testifying later and security tight around proceedings.
A 5.1 magnitude quake struck six miles offshore from Santa Barbara at 3 54 p m PDT injuring at least 50 people and causing shattered windows flooded streets and a derailed freight train near Goleta. Most utilities were restored by morning and minor structural damage was reported with Goleta absorbing much of the impact.
