Surplus corn shipping proposed to drought areas

Iowa and other states east of the Missouri river should ship surplus corn to Nebraska and drought‑stricken areas rather than build steel bins for storage. Butler, a Republican candidate in 1940, argued bins are impractical and that government storage underutilizes empty facilities west of the river. The Western Association of Railway Executives rejected free rail use for 33,000 bins and criticized CCC storage plans as competing with private grain storage. Agricultural officials met with midwestern states to discuss corn offered to repay government loans amid potential storage shortages.
