Hawkeye Downs hosts the 23rd annual All Iowa fair with a record shipment of 1300 head including beef cattle swine lambs and baby beef. The Junior Livestock Show All Iowa Open Beef Show and Pig Congress start Friday with judging through Saturday and the grand beef champion crowned Saturday.
An Angus steer exhibited by John Smylie of Columbus Junction was judged grand champion of the Louisa county fair. Ricky Schlutz of Letts won the reserve grand champion banner with an Angus.
The Amana Society was among the top buyers at the Iowa Swine Testing Association boar sale in Nevada. They purchased four tested boars, with D. M. Porter of Glen Elder, Kansas also taking four. The standout price was Herbert Hoover of Oskaloosa paying $430 for a Chester White from Kenneth Wendt’s Buckingham herd. The sale averaged $207 across 79 boars. Next sale dates set for Nevada next Wednesday with about 80 boars offered.
Linn county 4-H selected entries for the Iowa State fair clothing division at the All-Iowa county achievement show. Included are wool dress by Joyce Lamparek Cedar Rapids, school dress by Arlene Park Cedar Rapids, jumper by Jo LeHew Walker, sleeveless cotton blouse and cotton skirt by Eileen Morrison Marion, formal dress by Sue Calvin Center Point, blouse with sleeves by Loretta Hoppe Cedar Rapids, play clothes by Mary Bittner Marion, house coat by Jane Costello Cedar Rapids, pajamas by Judy Are Cedar Rapids, wool skirt by Ta Trachta Cedar Rapids, Bermuda shorts by Barbara Robiena Cedar Rapids, and long-time expense account book by Sharon Holets Cedar Rapids.
John T. Hamilton II of Marion bought a registered Guernsey bull from Leo and Joseph Fitzpatrick of Dubuque. The deal details the transfer of ownership and breed documentation.
Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago based on district mem ber bank reports notes 1958 average net return per yearling steer marketed at about 45 dollars. Earlier years show losses, with 1953 at 42.77 and 1950-58 average at 24.91. Prospects for 1958 59 indicate moderate profits, tighter feeder cattle supply, and firmer but not wide margins.
Iowa State agronomist F C Stickler reports tests show legume nitrogen is less efficient per pound than fertilizer nitrogen for corn. He notes legumes cost more due to sacrificing high profit crops to seed with low profit oats, yet farmers value legume forage and overall corn production remains strong.
Growers in 17 popcorn producing states plan 248000 acres this year, up 65 percent from 1957 and 51 percent above the 10 year average. This year’s crop would be the second largest on record after 1945, with Iowa leading at 44000 acres followed by Indiana 36000 and Illinois and Kentucky tied at 31000 each.
Harlan Keltner purchased the 120 acre Manley farm one mile east of Columbus City from the Erma Ayers estate for 29000 dollars. He will take half of this year’s crops and gain full possession on March 1. The Manley property has been owned by the Manley line for 105 years and adjoins Keltner’s own farm. The Bebb family now occupies it and plans to move to a new farm near Bagley. Duel to establish title to an island on Buccaneers, 5 p.m. Friday, Channel 9.
Iowa milk output for July is estimated at 611 million pounds, up fractionally from July 1957 and 1% above the 1947-56 July average. Through July 1958 total production statewide reached 4.007 billion pounds, about 1% below last year but 5% above the 10-year average. U.S. July milk production was 11.469 billion pounds, 1% below July 1957, and 1% above the 1947-56 July average.
Miss Shirley Bolton and Miss Rose Marie Larson were selected Tuesday night to represent Fayette county in the regional Queen of the Furrow Contest at the Winneshiek County fair Saturday night. Decorah reports 9 Holstein cows in the Sersland and Sons herd achieving a lactation average of 13 732 pounds of milk and 482 pounds of butterfat.
Sigourney buyers Glen and Cora Pettibone sold a 31642 acre farm north of Barnes City in Poweshiek County to Paul D Rice and Florence M Rice of Mt Pleasant for 87037.50 dollars. The sale was negotiated by Chet V Banes a Sigourney real estate broker.
Nashua residents will host a Farmers Union picnic at the fairgrounds on Sunday August 24. Speakers include Gerald R. Fisher candidate for state representative Floyd county Congress man H R Gross and Gross rival Mike Micich of Charles City as announced by picnic sponsors.
Dairy farmers supplying Grade A milk to Des Moines area will vote Monday on a proposed federal milk marketing order. The referendum covers plants serving Grinnell and counties including Adair Apanoose Boone Clarke Dallas Decatur Green Guthrie Jasper Lucas Madison Mahaska Marion Monroe Polk Story Union Wapello Warren Wayne. A two thirds vote is required, with polling at Albia Boone Carroll Corning Corydon Jefferson Leon Newton Oskaloosa Ottumwa and Grinnell from 8 a.m. to noon.
