Cmdr. James F. Calvert leads the Skate on a Arctic voyage with 10 officers 87 enlisted men and 9 civilians. The mission marks the submarine’s first Arctic venture as it surfaces to relay word of reaching the pole and returns toward New London while Eisenhower learns of the journey. Navy and Nautilus leaders congratulate the feat and note the growing record of polar exploration.
The Senate advanced a package of tax cuts including a small business relief providing a 20 percent expensing write off and a three year net operating loss carryback. An amusement tax revision would exempt the first dollar of admission fees and mainly affect theater and movie admissions.
Commerce Secretary Sinclair Weeks announced tentative billboard standards for the 40 000 mile federal state road network The rules set limits on brand name ads on roadside signs group ads in informational sites off the highway and ban moving signs Individual billboards would be allowed within 12 miles of the highway but not more than one per mile and some constraints apply to rural advertisers
Ensign James L. Johnson, 23, of Long Beach, sabotaged his LST causing 3100 in damage to avoid leaving for a western Pacific cruise. Court martial in San Diego sentenced him to six years at hard labor after he pleaded innocent, claiming his wife Patricia 20 was upset by his imminent departure. they had been married two years.
President Eisenhower signed a law aimed at reducing unneeded government secrecy while preserving the executive power to withhold information in the public interest. He noted the bill amends a long standing statute and does not overturn executive branch confidentiality capabilities. Subcommittee Chairman John E. Moss called the move a modest step in transparency efforts.
Ed Ilten display manager of Killian's received a $500 cash award for his Father's Day Old Spice display in Killian's store window. The award was presented by Jack Wilson Old Spice representative in the area.
The President proposed outside and oil-rich Gulf donors finance a regional institution with World Bank backing. He said Arab states must lead the effort, while the U S would support them, and called for joint action to tackle water scarcity and disease in the region including sharing atomic isotopes for locating underground water. The speech came as 15 000 U S troops began withdrawing from Lebanon.
Thousands of people cheered President Eisenhower as his motorcade left the Waldorf Astoria for the U N address. The 85 motorcycle police escorted a five minute drive while 3 000 by the hotel driveway and 5 000 at the U N plaza watched. Secretary Dulles and Ambassador Lodge occupied seats in the car as flags flew. A banner from Hungarians along the route urged Ike to remember Hungary.
Charles F. Morelock of Lawrence Kansas is appointed director of the news service at Iowa State Teachers College and will serve as an assistant in the college relations office.

Mrs William Kahle of Cedar Rapids died Wednesday at age 70. Born November 19 1874 in New London Missouri she was a member of Trinity Methodist Church. She leaves her husband sister Mrs D A Jones of Webster Groves Missouri and brother William H Barnard of Dodge City Kansas. Friends may call at Rohn funeral home 630 to 900 pm Wednesday. Body to be taken to New London for services and burial. Cancer fund donations suggested.
Anna B. Stout widow of Roy Stout and Cedar Rapids resident since 1936 died Tuesday at the home of her daughter Mrs. Evelyn Dodd in Cedar Rapids. Born Aug 6 1889 at Winton she married Aug 18 1905. She was affiliated with First Christian church. Survived by daughter Virginia Freeman of Houston Texas. Services at Frye and Holland funeral home in Vinton with time to be announced.

Washington AP reports Augustus Owsley Stanley, 91, a Democrat and key draftsman of the Clayton Antitrust Act, died Tuesday night. He served Kentucky in the House from 1902, became governor in 1915, then U.S. senator in 1918, and chaired the U.S. section of the International Joint Commission for 21 years before retiring in 1954.
Joseph Zabelski, safety education consultant for the Automobile Club of Michigan, tells University of Michigan attendees that no one is a truly great driver. He notes even skillful drivers have moments and that about 95% of good drivers have accidents due to distraction.
About 100000 German Catholics from East and West Berlin gathered for the 78th Catholic day meeting. The five day program includes church services exhibitions and Catholic work from around the world opening with twin ceremonies in West and East Berlin.
Baghdad UPI reports the Iraqi revolutionary government withdrew licenses of two Bagdad newspapers Al Khbar and Al Nass in the public interest. The move brings total local journals banned to three. Six Iraqi journalists and two Western correspondents face trial as supporters of the old regime.
Former Kansas governor Payne Ratner told the Senate rackets committee he interceded with Rep. Smith to keep Hoffa on the Hoffa hearing track and sought a postponement to avoid conflicting investigations. He denied any intent to squelch the inquiry or hire agents. He noted Hoffa’s conduct during questioning and Smith’s agreement to make the hearings fair.
Above 90 degrees for 11 days preceded scattered showers through Thursday with 80s highs. Iowa skies turn partly cloudy Friday as showers remain possible. A United Airlines Convair circled for about 45 minutes near Municipal airport before landing at 4 39 p.m. with 26 passengers from Omaha and Des Moines. Harvard law professor Harold J. Berman was appointed by Judge Edmund V. Keville to deliver five thousand dollars left by Boston painter Jacob Paulink to his Ukraine niece Paraskeva Homaruk. Berman will transport the legacy to the U S embassy in Moscow for pickup by the niece.
A 45-pound tapir born at Brookfield zoo is unnamed and temporarily called It. The South American animal, related to the horse and rhinoceros, resembles a pig and currently hides behind its mother in the elephant house. Director Robert Raoa says its sex is not yet determined.
The prematurely born son of American opera star Patricia Munsel and her husband Robert Schuler in Palma de Mallorca Spain weighed about 3 pounds at birth and has gained 18 ounces in 23 days. The hospital reported the infant is doing well as of Wednesday.
In Beirut the Lebanese government blocked a three member opposition delegation from attending the United Nations General Assembly emergency session. A delegation member said the cabinet decided not to permit them to depart.
A Cedar Rapids Marion United Fund budget committee sets a 1958 campaign goal of 496 075 up 1 059 from last fall. An 840 item may be added by the Public Welfare bureau at its next meeting. The budget includes 2 500 for Iowa Children’s Home Society and 3 650 for auditing.

Sixteen bodies recovered after All Nippon Airways DC-3 crash 80 miles south of Tokyo. Thirty three aboard including one American, Howard Kreiss of Los Angeles, perished. The craft, en route Tokyo to Nagoya, went down after engine trouble near O Shima Island. search involved 33 ships and 22 planes, with no survivors found.
Fred S Kaiser 35 of 1721 Second St SW was fined 300 after pleading guilty to a drunk driving charge in a Cedar Rapids court. He was arrested Tuesday at 1 30 a m by a highway patrolman on Sixteenth Avenue SW and allowed to pay the fine in 500 monthly installments by Judge J E Heiserman.
Leonard W. Wiedenman files a new $3,583 injury lawsuit in Linn County District Court on behalf of his daughter Donna, who was cut in the face by falling glass in the Iowa theater building entry Jan 3. Security Realty Corp. is named as defendant. original suit was dismissed in July over a jury trial issue.
Owners of three properties along Twenty-ninth Street NE appealed to district court in land condemnation cases. Hazel M Reams Dilman Mildred Beck Edward Ruth Broderick sought damages with claims of 3250 for Reams and Beck parcels and 6050 for the Broderick parcel, arguing loss of development potential from city paving near Oakland Road.
Four judgments were entered Tuesday against Choate Equipment Company in four separate account suits. Neptune Meter Company received $1,295.38, Kimball Company $350, Crane Carrier Corporation $250, and Fullwell Motor Products Company $204.05. Another account suit awarded $931.59 against Kenje Distributing Company in favor of Kraft Foods division of The Dairy Products Corporation.
