Budget deficit tops 1.5 trillion as fiscal year nears end

The U.S. budget gap reached 1.52 trillion for the first 10 months of the year, down 6 percent from last year as higher receipts and tax-deferment amid disaster zones helped narrow the shortfall. July deficit totaled 244 billion, 16 percent below July 2023, while debt service rose 32 percent to 956 billion. The Fed's rate hikes pushed borrowing costs higher, with debt yields near a decade high.

Hospitals fail to treat ectopic pregnancy under federal law

A Texas woman, Kyleigh Thurman, asked for emergency care for an ectopic pregnancy but was sent home with a miscarriage pamphlet. She returned in worse condition and was given only an injection that proved too late, sparking a federal complaint led by the Center for Reproductive Rights. The issue follows Biden administration warnings and race to balance federal protections with Texas abortion bans, with multiple cases of delayed or denied care across several states.
