Ellsworth blends history and material in stone tile art

Ellsworth creates gallery pieces from stone tile and shelves that double as sculptures. His logo eagle uses black absolute and blue pearl granites, and he cites Mayan astrology and Roman mosaics as influences. He used Italian and Spanish marble plus Chinese stone and Vermont slate for a project at Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. He programmed a water jet to cut stone, with mixed results, and builds with stone as the structural element rather than a separate frame.
