Brig. Gen William E. Shedd told the House military affairs committee that congressional delays on conscription and appropriations push the Army’s planned 900000 uniformed strength to 1941. He outlined a schedule calling for 220000 national guardsmen and 400000 conscripts by January 1, with staggered calls through December. Senate debate also touched on Donovan and Burke with Wheeler challenging Donovan’s status as civilian military expert.
Mrs. Marcelina Roeshh of 1502 Fourteenth Avenue SE reports a Des Moines woman posed as a gifted prophet, swindling her of 300 dollars by wrapping cash in a white cloth and instructing prayer and sleep with it. The money was found to be only crumpled newspaper.

Glenn McMurrin 32 of 554 H Street SW was charged with driving while intoxicated after a high speed collision with a star route mail truck at Fifth Avenue and First Street SW in Cedar Rapids. Police said a chemical test showed excess alcohol in his blood. McMurrin and two women suffered minor injuries. Delbert Clark 24 of route No 2 drove the mail truck and substituted for Alva Shaffer.Clark was en route to the Cedar Rapids post office to transfer mail for a train at Marion when the crash occurred. The injured included McMurrin who had a cut under his chin and injuries to a finger and chest.
A teletype printer from United Press is installed in The Gazette booth at the All Iowa fair Exposition hall. The device prints 60 words a minute and provides full coverage with Associated Press International News and UP dispatches. Visitors read bulletins hot off the wire as fair crowds gather.
Four thousand youngsters plus two thousand adults packed the grandstand for Children’s Day at the All Iowa fair. Thrill drivers Ray Mortensen and Homer Clifton were injured in accidents, one hospital bound, but both recovered. The day featured rides stage acts and rest stops as heat fatigue set in and the crowd enjoyed a rare break from politics and world news.
An inch and a half of rain washed out the Tuesday matinee at the All-Iowa fair but the evening show proceeded and the Wednesday racing card was set as a top Iowa meet. Track drainage handled runoff, midway dried by noon, and 8 pm starts for the Tuesday show with Wednesday races at 1 30 pm.
John R. Van Der Millen Jr 22 of Dubuque pled guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated after his car climbed a curb on Seventh Avenue near Fifteenth Street in Marion and returned to the pavement with two tires blown. He received a 90 day county jail sentence and surrendered his license for suspension. Elmer Rinton 37 of Galena Ill was jailed eight days in lieu of a fine and costs totaling 28 dollars on an intoxication count. Commit ment was issued by Justice C E Drummond of Marion.
Arthur B. Purvis, head of the British purchasing mission, said Washington would offer Great Britain between 1,300 and 1,400 warplanes monthly starting late in 1941.
Unhurt occupants Mr and Mrs George W Swenson report their home at 521 Eighteenth street NE struck by lightning early Tuesday. Fire and plaster damage dominate the living room with a three foot hole beside the front door. A tree in front shows a 15 foot fissure likely struck first transferring the bolt to the porch. No electricity in the house and the bolt apparently jumped from tree to porch.
Admiral Thomas C Hart arrives in Shanghai on Wednesday to back a plan for US Marines to assume control of vital British area sectors in the international settlement. Tokyo resists while Col De Witt Peck pushes to guard the waterfront and key districts, with Moriji Takeda and Hart now in contest. The submarine force travels with Pigeon as escort.
Dr Malcolm Price, Iowa born and Cornell educated, has been selected to succeed the late Orval Raymond Latham as president of Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls. The appointment becomes effective Sept 1, announced by Anna B Lawther. Price has long経験 in Detroit public schools and holds a doctorate in educational administration.
London reports 57 German planes destroyed and nine British fighters lost in a three day aerial blitz along the 200 mile English Channel front. Berlin tallies 69 British planes downed. censorship obscures tolls while rumors of imminent invasion grow.
Massive waves of German bombers broaden attacks across Britain's southeast and southwest as a major air battle rages over the Channel. RAF bombers strike northwest Germany and targets in France and Holland, including the Gotha factory.
Electrical storms swept Cedar Rapids early Tuesday delivering 1.46 inches of rain. Temperatures rose from 66 at 9:30 a.m. to 78 by 2:30 p.m. with a 83 degree peak earlier, and minor outages were reported overnight due to lightning.
