Branstad reflects on life after Iowa Governorship

Former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, now 53, discusses life in the private sector after leaving office in 1999. He notes a relaxed pace, ongoing opinions, and plans to enter the financial services industry while avoiding a return to politics. He remains proud of steering Iowa through the farm crisis and achieving a large budget surplus.

Medicaid budget shortfall to be funded from unspent state funds

Vilsack administration officials said Iowa will cover a 6.9 million shortfall in Medicaid by transferring reverted funds from other agencies. The $422 million budget was exceeded by 1.6 percent last year, prompting discussions of waiting lists for child care and higher costs for seniors, disabled Iowans, and nursing home reimbursements. House Speaker Siegrist criticized the move as a political blame game amid the current fiscal year’s funding of 421 million from general funds plus 25 million from tobacco settlement proceeds.
