Chicago reports hog prices at a high unseen since last September with the top at $11.40 as receipts fell about 6,000 from the prior week. Strictly prime steers remain scarce and bid above 10.25 while overall cattle activity softens and hides mixed gains in light hogs and lambs.
Hog receipts reach 13 000 with 4 000 direct. prices up 10 to 15 cents from Tuesday. Top hogs 11.40. bulk 180-250 lbs 11.00 to 11.35. lighter hogs $8.85 to 9.50. Cattle receipts 12 000. fed steers and yearlings mostly steady to 25 cents lower. early top 9.50 with Western Nebraska up to 10.00. heifers around 9.00. Sheep receipts 9 000 with native lambs steady at 9.25 to 9.75. other sheep mixed with slaughter grades and range lambs unsold early.
AP report from South St. Paul shows cattle receipts at 2,800 with a weak undertone and varied quotes for grain fed steers, heifers, cows, bulls and calves. Hog receipts at 6,200 push prices higher for lights and butchers while sows rise modestly, and sheep and dairy cows show steady to firm demand with values listed for multiple grades.
U S Department of Agriculture report shows combined hog receipts at 15 300 for interior Iowa and southern Minnesota in 24 hours to 8 a m Wednesday, down from 20 900 last week and 7 200 a year ago. Prices range 8 45 to 11 00 for various weight classes with uneven demand and activity varying by hog quality.
The Associated Press reports hog price ranges in Waterloo with variations by weight. Strong demand pushes higher quotes for lighter hogs while heavier weights show mixed to lower bids. Prices span from about 8.35 to 10.70 per 100 pounds across weight classes and packing hogs.
Ottumwa hog prices rise 10 cents across weights with ranges from 140 to 550 pounds. Prices listed for each weight bracket and packers, including 425 to 550 pounds. Mason City market shows gains of 5 to 10 cents with good lights and butchers across several weight classes.
Hog market moved up ten cents with lights steady in Austin Minnesota. Prices ranged for 180 to 350 pounds, with 180-200 at 10.25 to 10.55 and 325-350 at 9.30 to 9.60. Packing sow values for 275 to 550 pounds were 8.00 to 8.95.

Cattle fully steady medium weight weights and steer runs mixed with choice loads at 9 00 and 8 30 8 60. cows steady to strong. Hogs higher with 190 240 lb barrows 10 90 top. sows 9 35. Local hog market rose by ten cents on Wednesday with bids reaching a top of 10.85 dollars. Cattle and other local markets held steady with no change.

In Chicago the butter futures market closes with October at 26 percent, while potato futures end with October around 2.20 and January near 2.9, reflecting varying price moves amid refrigerator standards discussion.

Sugar prices in New York trading were unchanged at 3.65 for spot, with futures up 1 point to 4.75 for refined grade. September futures rose to 2.73 and January to 2.49 amid quiet market activity.

Railroad crews in Gainesville Texas repaired sun warped rails after a Missouri Kansas Texas freight derailed the same train twice in one day. Extreme heat bent the track twelve miles west of town Tuesday causing nine cars and the caboose to leave the rails, then a second warp toppled ten more cars on a bridge.
Henry Kling described a 7,707 mile family trip covering sixteen states and Mexico. He spoke before the Kiwanis at Hotel Montrose and said northeast Iowa is the garden spot of the west for crops except in Texas and Oklahoma where rainfall has been abundant and in irrigated areas.
Jim Wait of 2708 Mount Vernon Avenue SE was arrested at 4 20 a m after police found him driving a car they had locked and taken keys for The keys belonged to John Zrudsky of rural route 4 Police earlier at 12 33 a m had gone to the Biondo beer parlor to investigate a disturbance and found Zrudsky as the sole customer The proprietor agreed to drive him home and police took the car keys Wait claims the two are friends and that Wait did mechanical work on the car. investigators sought to locate Zrudsky to verify the story.

William C. Karr employed by Ringling Brothers fell from a loading platform Wednesday morning and struck his head on a rail. He was taken to Mercy hospital where several stitches were required.
Roy L. Stewart of 1312 Gavenue NE Donald D. Butler of Williamsburg and Vernon J. Herren of North English were enlisted in the United States navy on Tuesday at Des Moines. They departed immediately for the training station in San Diego California.
Mervin Knapp of Mount Vernon pled guilty to speeding and was fined ten dollars and costs with jail in default of payment. Marvin Koffron of 328 Wilson SW paid ten dollars and costs for the same charge. Sam Dean of Amana was fined twenty five dollars and costs for reckless driving with fifteen dollars suspended. Mrs William A Murphy, Herbert Detlefts, and Floyd Knapp were each fined one dollar and costs for overtime and alley parking and over time parking respectively.
A Cedar Rapids area farmer warns of men posing as hunters whose dogs are trained to catch chickens roaming away from barns. He recalls a last fall incident when a man sought to test a dog for squirrel hunting but appeared focused on catching chickens.
Joseph R. Buresh 61 died suddenly at his home on Thirty fifth Street SE after a heart attack. Born in Ely in 1875 he lived in Cedar Rapids thirty years and worked as a fuel merchant and at Kenwood Savings Bank. Survived by wife Julia two daughters a son and a granddaughter. Funeral at Barta chapel Friday at 2 pm with Rev. E Winslow Brown officiating. Burial in Linwood cemetery. Friends may call Thursday evening.
The Marion Parent Teacher Association met at Mrs. Koppenhaver’s home to plan the year. A letter from Linn County Medical Association offered free diphtheria vaccines for babies 9 to 24 months, with doctors’ offices available August 18 to 20, and a small fee for older children.
