Labor movement under siege in talks at AFL-CIO meeting
AFL-CIO official Al Barkan warned the U.S. labor movement faces serious trouble and a long war for survival amid attacks from the Right-To-Work Committee and the National Association of Manufacturers. He noted 800 local unions decertified in 1977 and a drop in election approval rates from 64 percent in 1966 to 46 percent last year. He urged vigilance at the state level and warned against assuming Democratic allies are firm friends. Gov. Robert Ray addressed the delegates, listing labor appointees he has named to state posts including Al Meier as labor commissioner and Hugh Clark to the Iowa Development Commission.
