Methane Drift From City Dump Triggers Evacuation
Methane gas drifting from the nearby city landfill forced the evacuation of a southwest Cedar Rapids apartment building. Utility crews detected gas near 2271 C St SW and confirmed it came from the landfill. By 1 p.m. residents returned after dissipating. no exposure or danger occurred. City officials plan rapid completion of a methane migration control project begun in 1983 with wells connected to a ventilation system to prevent future incursions.

Rescar tar kettle fire causes heavy smoke in Cedar Rapids
Cedar Rapids firefighters responded to Rescar Inc at 1800 10th St SE to a blaze in a 100 gallon tar kettle used to liquefy viscous oil for tank car loading. The oil, described as a tarry almost solid material, produced heavy smoke though the fire was confined. Investigators planned to determine the cause. Rescar operates railroad car maintenance and repair.

Power outage blamed on a squirrel in Cedar Rapids
A squirrel blew two fuses at an IE sub station on Coldstream Avenue, knocking out electricity for about an hour to 2,320 customers in northeast Cedar Rapids. IE spokeswoman Colleen Reilly said restoration followed. Reconstruction work on Sixth Avenue in downtown Marion aims to two way traffic by early next week.

Iowa crop yields mix as delayed planting clouds outlook
