Ottumwa banker Jerry Long halted a check scheme by Clif ford Elmer Privia 25 of Fort Madison who used a fictitious United Fisheries account to pass two checks over $700 each drawn on a Nauvoo Illinois bank. She bought dresses with the checks, fled, and was arrested for forgery with bond set at 5,000. Authorities say similar schemes occurred in Muscatine and Burlington.

He fled using a blanket rope after removing two bars from a second floor cell.
