The Wyoming Community club hosts a three day event at the town’s northeast edge from Monday to Wednesday. Children’s day opens with free acts and 4 H and Scout exhibits judged by Mrs. Peter Brodersen. Tuesday features handiwork, oven products, fruits, vegetables, a steer show, and judging by Joe Legg and Mrs. Maxine Hunt. Queen of the Furrow named. Wednesday includes a flower show and a 7:30 p.m. parade of winners followed by dancing.
Iowa's highway officials question why counties with large balances lag on farm-to-market road spending. The Iowa Highway Commission approved investing 13.5 million in 90 day treasury bills to earn interest while fund balances hover around 19 percent million and contracts total about 16 million. Highway Engineer Jack Reid said counties with sizable balances had been contacted and stressed that taxes fund road building, not idle investments.
A bear struck a transformer pole in Davenport causing a 13 000 volt line to fail and power to be cut for nearly three hours. Police said driver Robert L Foutch 26 Silvis Illinois apparently fell asleep as the incident occurred.
The project includes acquisition of new land and swimming pools for both the new and present senior highs.
Davenport voters will decide September 23 on a $3 400 000 bond issue for a new high school in northwest Davenport. A separate measure asks approval to use $1 000 000 already in the schoolhouse fund.
Two Iowa Highway Commission workers at Center Point were suspended for failing to observe working hours. Clair Ellis received 30 days and Joseph J. Jordan two weeks after an anonymous tip. Ellis, a 30 year employee, started late and quit early.
Two people died and two were injured in Iowa auto accidents Thursday. Darrell Sammons, 21, of Mount Pleasant died when his car overturned on Highway 34 west of Mount Pleasant. Ramona Moorehead, 17, remained in serious condition. Eerie Ann Hiller, 18, of Charter Oak, was killed when a car she rode in left the road on Highway 75. An additional Iowan life was lost in Indiana Wednesday.
Des Moines trucker Charles Deach, 43, was killed Wednesday in a two-truck collision near Terre Haute Indiana. James Nemitz, 19, of Charter Oak, was hospitalized in Sioux City after the crash. Glenwood man Ray Chapman, 67, died when he fell from a road maintainer two miles southeast of Glenwood.
Eva Jane Schoon, 16, freed her 11 year old brother Glen Schoon after a tractor rollover trapped him. Glen suffered a broken arm and cuts while Allan Gerdes escaped unharmed. The rescue occurred as their father John Schoon helped mow weeds.
Centerville parents of 23 year old Zanna Strandberg, last seen July 8 in Cleveland, posted a $250 reward for information. She had been living in Chicago and disappeared during a Cleveland visit with a friend. A sighting July 9 in Iowa City with a man named John Colman prompted hope of locating her.
Alma Andersson, once deemed impossible to recover, is back home in Rockford after seven weeks in hospital following a booby trap blast. Doctors had warned the injury might prove fatal or leave her with lasting disabilities.
A woman injured in a breezeway blast that cost her right leg and arm and blinded an eye showed a visible recovery after weeks in critical condition. Her husband Alderman Eric Anderson and their son witnessed her ascent of the home steps as police search for motives and suspects. Riley P. Clark of Lewis, president, paid a state filing fee with five silver dollars.
DES MOINES AP The Iowa School Organization Inc of Lewis Indiana organized to oppose absorption of small schools and endorses measures to keep local districts autonomous. The group argues consolidation reduces local control and hurts rural education budgets.
Lloyd Wadig is appointed town marshal replacing Ernest Petersen who resigned. Bob Brown remains the other town marshal.
