How air traffic controllers track planes
Controllers direct airport traffic either from towers or darkened centers. They monitor with radar displays and blips, relay takeoff and landing instructions, and hand off planes to center controllers as flights traverse larger airspaces.
Air traffic control uses radar blips and transponder targeting
Controllers view planes as blips on radar and use a tracking ball to lock on. Each aircraft carries a transponder that returns identification data to the radar display.
