Vapam Past First Two Trees Inelm root graft barriers urged

Ames root graft transmission of Dutch elm disease continues to take a heavy toll on Iowa elms says A H Epstein extension pathologist at Iowa State University. Barriers to prevent spread can be trenching or by injecting Vapam soil fumigant into the soil. If barriers are not yet in place, root graft transmission to adjacent elms likely has occurred and barriers should be installed beyond the first and second adjacent trees. Healthy adjacent trees should be checked for signs of transmission before deciding barrier location.
