Inbreeding Speeds Maturity in Ames White Leghorns
A ten year Ames study by Dr. N F Waters and Dr W V Lambert finds intense inbreeding speeds pullet maturity by sixteen days without major losses in 200 day egg production or body growth. Hatchability stays above 60 percent though gradual declines rise with deeper inbreeding. Breeders are advised to limit inbreeding to preserve flock quality and avoid fixing undesirable traits.
