The Gazette outlines Iowa's sixth annual sales tax holiday to exempt purchases of new and used clothing or shoes under 100 dollars from the 5 percent state tax and any local option tax. The event runs on a Friday and Saturday, offering shoppers relief on apparel purchases.
The tax exemption covers clothing and footwear but with many carve outs across apparel. The holiday, trimmed to Friday and Saturday, avoids Sunday due to higher retail activity and budget constraints. Exceptions include jogging bras but not jock straps, partial shoe inserts but not full insoles, golf caps but not gloves, graduation gowns but not sports uniforms, and cowboy boots but not hiking boots.
At Coe College in Iowa 119 glass experts from 17 countries stayed in dorms for the fourth international borate glasses conference in 2002. Attendees toured a local farm and the Mississippi paddleboat while Coe earned praise for undergraduate research culture and NSF supported REU programs.
Oakdale prison will move inmates from dining hall meals to in unit tray service after a new complex adds 176 beds, increasing total capacity and converting the hall into a serving center. In 20 minute periods about 150 inmates dine, with food shipped to units.
Regents set the three university presidents pay for the year starting July 1. David Skorton at Iowa, Gregory Geoffroy at Iowa State, and Robert Koob at Northern Iowa all receive raises. Skorton earns 296 138 dollars, 3 percent. Geoffroy 301 889 dollars, 5 percent plus 60 000 deferred. Koob 237 845 dollars, 5 percent.
A child friendly mobile phone called the Firefly offers picture buttons for calling Mom and Dad instead of numeric keys. Priced at 99 dollars, the 3.5 inch device is marketed as the only kids oriented cell phone and can store Mom’s number. The Firefly is sold at Super Target on Edgewood Road SW.
