Director Sees New Snags in Settlements In Iowa
Ames Iowa The highway commission right of way director warned that Iowa s new compensation commission for condemnation awards will trigger many appeals and delays. Gordon Sweitzer said the six member panel chosen from county residents will tilt awards toward landowners and raise costs, calling the process helter skelter and influenced by friendships and political ties. The law, effective July 1, creates a panel of two real estate professionals, two property experts, and two townspeople or farmers depending on rural or urban land, replacing the former six person jury system. The county board of supervisors provides local names and the district judge selects the case panel. First award details referenced.
