Iowa June meat output sets record in 1964 report

Iowa's June commercial meat production reached 381,951,000 pounds, a record since 1947. Output rose 15 percent from 1962 and 21 percent above the five year June average. Cattle slaughter up 26 percent, hogs up 5 percent, with live weight gains moderating.

Fat Cattle Sale Inaugurated At Belle Plaine

Belle Plaine hosts the first weekly fat cattle auction by Belle Plaine Livestock Auction Inc marking the transition from the former company. The sale drew more than 00 head of fed steers and heifers with buyers from packers and firms. Prime steers topped above 24 dollars, and Angus steers fed by Charles Vatel sold for 24.65 dollars amid mostly 23 to 44 dollar ranges for Choice and Prime lots. heifers were similar in finish and price. The new corporation follows 11 years of operation by Tuhaugh Brothers with stock offerings to farmers and livestock men, totaling about 120,500 dollars invested in shares and scrip.

Mente and Jackson Win Cedar County Livestock Meet

Tipton led the Cedar County livestock judging contest with Mente securing first in the junior division and Jackson taking top honors in seniors. Junior Livestock Show Announces New Contest and Entries

Hamilton outlined the junior feeders' contest with 33 head of steers to be exhibited. Projects include 62 dairy heifers, 10 ponies, 154 market pigs, 4 purebred pigs, 3 market lambs, 13 purebred lambs, and 40 steer land. Steers will be slaughtered and awards based on rate of gain, cost of gain, net profit, and carcass placing.

Four Will Get Star American Farmers Degree

Four outstanding young farmers named by the Future Farmers of America board to receive the Star American Farmer awards for 14. They are Merlin Hamilton of Queen Creek Aziz, George H. Culverhouse Jr. of Fort Pierce Florida Lyle F. Nielsen of Creighton Nebraska and Don Carlton Tyler of Conneautville Pennsylvania a member of the Conneaut Valley FFA chapter. A judges committee will meet in Kansas City on October 14 to select the top winner.

Freeman Urges Cattlemen Not To Push Import Bill

Washington UPI Agriculture Secretary Orville Freeman urged about 25 members of the American National Cattlemen's Assn committee to oppose import quotas on beef. He said legislation will not cut imports this year or next and that voluntary agreements avert dumping, risking wheat, rice, and other farm markets if quotas were imposed.

Mt Vernon Youth Wins County Tractor Rodeo

Carl Machula of Mt Vernon will represent Linn County at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines after winning last week's county tractor rodeo in Central City with 156 points. David Booth of Marion and Dwayne Meyers of Palo followed, with Norman Zhradnik of Cedar Rapids and Stephen Martin of Marion also placing high. The event was sponsored by the Linn County Farm Bureau and farm machinery dealers at the county fair.

Livestock Price Index Up in Iowa On July Fifteenth

Iowa's index of prices received by farmers for all farm products rose by 13 percentage points from June to July. The all farm products index stood at 230.95 on the 1910-14 base, up from 217.9 on June 15, 1964, and 246% from July 15, 1963.
