Eight Iowans drown at lakes and rivers during grim weekend
A rash of drownings killed eight Iowans Sunday as crowds flocked to swimming areas. Victims include Red Oak residents Mrs. Jack Silkett and Patty Fox at Vik ing Lake, Oska Joosa girl Susan H Beaver at Edmundson Park pool, Alfons Klein Jr. at Lake West Okoboji, plus youths in the Missouri river near Newcastle Nebraska and Lake Argyle near Colchester Illinois. A Cedar Rapids CAP cadet John Daywitt died in Ontario, and other drownings occurred in Crystal Lake gravel pit and the Cedar River near Palisades Kepler State Park.

Couples Honored At Little Brown Church Reunion
The Little Brown Church in Nashua drew over 2 000 visitors and 281 couples who were married there as they renewed vows at the annual homecoming. Lorenz Godderz and wife were recognized as the longest married returning couple since 1919, while Henry Ewoldt and Pearl Fawcett were the shortest time since marriage. The event honors the church famed by a song written by Dr. William S. Pitt, with the 100th anniversary of the song noted last year.

Five Die In Iowa Traffic Crashes Weekend
Five persons died in Iowa highway crashes over the weekend. Floyd Rodman a 19 year old airman from Sioux City whose wife had given birth last Wednesday was killed when his car overturned on a blacktop road eight miles north of Sioux City. Four others were injured. Richard Wilson 18 of Walnut died when his car collided with a truck on highway 6 near Atlantic. Gene Palmer 25 of rural Mapleton died when his truck overturned on the highway shoulder near Moville. Paul Dolan 34 of Mason City was killed when his car rear ended a Northwestern Freight train at a residential crossing with foggy conditions. Karl Sauer of Sioux City fatally injured when his car hit an abutment at Wall Street viaduct and died later in hospital.

Broken Journal Blamed For Train Derailment
A broken journal is believed to have caused the derailment of 19 cars of a Chicago Great Western freight five miles northeast of Irwin. The train was en route to Chicago when the accident occurred. cars scattered over a wide area but no injuries were reported.
Farm Accident Fatal to Edward Karash 63
Edward Karash aged 63 died in Cresco hospital from injuries suffered Thursday on a John Swan farm near Riceville. He fell under a wagon after a bale slipped while loading baled hay, dying Sunday night. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Col. A. G. Evanoff, born in Belle Plaine and a University of Iowa alumnus, will lead Stead Air Base near Reno after serving as wing commander at Goodfellow AFB. He and his wife Pearl Hennings plan to move with their three children in late August. He previously taught ROTC at Coe College and Iowa State College and is a World War II and Korean War veteran.

Lost purse with $200 returned to Des Moines veteran
World War II veteran George D. Bunten, 54, of Ottumwa, awaiting admission to the veterans hospital, lost his wallet containing his last $200. An honest truck driver, Marvin Sachwitz, 28, of South St. Paul, found the wallet near a hotel entrance and, with police, helped return it to Bunten.

A. Hoyt Ellis 79, retired Vinton businessman, died Friday in Portland, Ore. His body returns to Vinton for services and burial. He helped run Ellis-McDowell Lumber Co, served as secretary of Iowa Canning Co until its sale to Green Giant a decade ago, and was a former president of the Iowa Nebraska Canning Company. Survived by sisters Mrs. Garth Carrier of Vinton, Mrs. T. J. Bracken of Mason City, and brother L. W. Ellis of Arcadia, California.

IT. W. Mullaney a former state senator and longtime Waukon figure dies aged 75. Services set for Tuesday at 9 30 a m at St Patrick s church with burial in Mt Olivet cemetery. He was born March 26 1883 and chaired several county farms groups while serving as mayor of Waukon from 1955 and running for Congress as a Democrat in 1948 and 1952. He leaves four children.

Three Oelwein Residents Hurt in Auto Crash
Three Oelwein residents were injured Sunday night in a crash six miles southwest of Readlyn. Alvin Kiel, 46, city councilman, suffered a fractured shoulder and was treated at a Waterloo hospital. His brother Calvin, 33, and Calvin’s daughter Linda, 4, had cuts and bruises and were released. Also injured were Janola Ann Hesse, 26, and her five month old son William.

Slosky 28 a sailor stationed at Charleston confessed to killing Henry Cripenberg 27 a Marine Corps reservist who once lived in Des Moines Cripenberg died with five .25 caliber bullets.
