Bankers and Grain Dealers Protest Omaha Bank Plan
Iowa bankers and grain dealers plan to protest a plan by the Omaha Bank for Cooperatives allowing cooperative elevators to handle commodity loan notes. The scheme would pay elevators 3 percent of 1 percent as a handling commission, with the bank earning the same. Critics call it government encroachment on private banking and fear rural banks face hardship. The Farmers Grain Dealers association of Iowa outlined the plan to elevators, with conditions including at least 51 percent business with members.
