Chicago tops Washington 7 to 6 as Rene Monteagudo yields six runs in the fourth inning. Knott and Brown hold the late lead, with Walker homering for Washington and Travis driving in two for the Senators.
Dick Siebert belted a three-run homer in the ninth to lift Philadelphia past the Browns 11 to 7 in St. Louis. Bob Johnson hit his 20th homer for the A's. Heffner added a Browns homer, with Brancato and McQuinn contributing for Philadelphia in a high-scoring affair.
Baseball and hockey style standings show Springfield, Decatur, Moline, and Clinton leading their divisions with various records. The St Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Giants 8 to 3 as Lon Warneke earned his fourth straight win. St Louis totaled 17 hits led by Ernie Kay Pepper Martin and Johnny Mize homers. Warneke allowed nine Giants hits and contributed four safeties himself. Six runs came in the first three innings securing the lead.
Detroit pounded Boston 6 to 4 and 14 to 2 to widen their edge over Cleveland to a game and a half as Fred Hutchinson and Johnny Gorsica excelled on the mound. Billy Sullivan and Charley Gehringer supplied key doubles and Gorsica homered in the eighth for Detroit's big second game victory.
Ken Raffensberger pitched five hits allowed a 2-1 Cubs win over Brooklyn. Billy Herman drove in a run with a fifth inning single and Bill Nicholson hit his 17th homer in the sixth. A spectator caught a Pee Wee Reese fly for a disputed homer ruling.
Springfield defeats Waterloo 22 to 8 as 18 hits and six errors fuel the win. Bradley belts a homer, Brownie plates run in every inning but the fifth, boosting Springfield to a half game lead over the Raiders. Decatur tops Madison 7 to 6 to join Badgers in fifth.
Cincinnati Reds substitute catcher Willard Hershberger, 29, was found dead in a Back Bay hotel room in Boston. Medical Examiner ruled death by self-inflicted wound with a razor. Pay checks and notes from teammates reflected his troubled state after a doubleheader the previous day.
Al Smith lashed the New York Yankees with six hits allowed and a five to one win for Cleveland. The Indians struck early scoring four in the first inning led by Weatherly Boudreau Bell and Keltner with Trosekys triple, then held the Yankees to one run in the fifth before finishing with a dozen hits off three Yankee pitchers.
Kayak II ridden by C S Howard won the $20,000 added Sunset handicap at Hollywood Park on Saturday. Specify finished second and Bif Fish took third.
