Sludge Spill Reaches Cedar River From Plant Break
A broken pipe at the Water Pollution Control plant in Cedar Rapids released about 97,000 gallons of human waste sludge. Around 5,000 gallons entered storm sewers and flowed toward the Cedar River before crews contained most of it within 10 minutes. The DNR notified park rangers to keep people out of Palisades Kepler State Park downstream as a precaution.
