Simon Milward tours worldwide to support charities improving health care in poor nations. He stops in Iowa City tonight as memories of World War II PT boats resurface for Merle Bliss of Cedar Rapids. The JHawks softball bid ends in an 8 inning 1-0 loss for the state title quest.
The Gazette reports that window hours at up to 30 small-town posts in Eastern Iowa may be reduced as the USPS seeks cost savings. Mark Allen, who oversees about 130 offices around Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, would not name affected locations but said smaller offices with a full time postmaster are most at risk. He added cuts are needed as mail volume declines and customer service adapts to a changing environment. A postmaster at an Eastern Iowa office, requesting anonymity, warned reduced hours would hurt customers.
Nathan Thole faced heartbreak when his Jumbo Cornish died before the Clayton County Fair Poultry Show. His father Don made a 60 mile round trip to Arlington to fetch a replacement chicken so Nathan could still enter his first 4H event with a pair.
At the Clayton County Fair in National the event runs through Monday with admission six dollars and crowds of up to twenty five thousand. Nathan, a farm boy, placed second in the heavy broiler class after squeezing between taller exhibitors on the judging table. His mother Teresa Thole says he helped slaughter and dress twenty chickens earlier in the week and was not upset by the loss. Contact Rural Affairs writer Marlene Lucas.

Linn County’s 90 000 property tax bills are in the mail and Cedar Rapids residents face a 25 percent average increase. The rise stems from a 14 percent reassessment by the assessor to reflect market values and a 19 percent tax-rate hike by the Cedar Rapids school district to fund early retirements bond payments and reserve replenishment. The state’s cuts to homestead and senior citizen credits also tightened wallets.
