IE Industries Reports Sharply Higher Earnings
IE Industries Inc. and its Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. unit posted double digit gains in six month and quarterly earnings. Net income for six months reached 13.4 million or 99 cents a share versus 8.3 million and 63 cents last year, while quarterly income rose to 3.7 million or 27 cents a share from 1.4 million and 11 cents. Revenues dipped to 195.2 million from 216.9 million in the prior year period, though quarterly revenue edged up to 89.9 million from 86.7 million. A 2 percent rise in electric sales over six months and 5 percent in the quarter accompanied hotter weather and ongoing cost controls. The report notes a 5.2 million charge for an abandoned Guthrie County project and an accounting-method change that favored income. Robert J. Latham attributed the gains to growth in service area and weather effects.
