Iowa Drops Slogan on License Plates After Public Backlash

The Iowa Transportation Commission scrapped the slogan A State of Minds for plates after more than 400 phone calls and widespread public opposition. Chairman Robert Rigler pushed the reversal noting democracy works and urging a return to non slogan plates in 1985. Branstad had previously urged adoption.

U S poverty rate hits highest since 1965

The Census Bureau reports 34.4 million Americans, 15 percent, below the poverty line in 1982, the highest since 1965. President Reagan plans a bipartisan task force to study hunger with a no holds barred approach, while women’s full time median income rose 3.3 percent.

Iowa teachers paid below national average in 1982 83

The National Education Association reports Iowa teachers earned an average of 18 990 in 1982 83, $1 613 below the national average, while Cedar Rapids teachers averaged 22 023. Alaska led with 33 953, DC 26 048, and Mississippi had the lowest at 14 323. Iowa ranked 30th nationally.
