Lura Suspended in State Gaming Probe Fallout

Farm price loan rate split props up 70 percent ceiling

Nagle voted no on a bill amendment that would raise loan rates on wheat and feed grain price loans to 80 percent but the House approved Rep Edward Madigan 70 percent rate cut. Sioux City Democrat Withdraws From November Ballot

Rep. Mike Peters a Sioux City Democrat withdraws his name from the November ballot after taking a job as liaison between the United Way campaign and local labor unions. Peters 40, a former packinghouse worker and union activist had been unopposed in the June primary with no Republican candidate filed for District 2.

Palo pair hold firm as Cedar River floods their home

At 9 p.m. Wednesday the Cedar River had risen to four feet in the basement of Barry Springman and Debbie Waters on Chain Lakes Road near Palo. They planned to stay to defend their home and three sump pumps as floodwaters threatened the electrical box and first floor carpeting. Flooding affected nearby farms and a park, with only this Palo couple and neighbors reported as flooded in the city beyond. They prepared to evacuate by boat to their car on higher ground, while flood insurance covered buildings but not belongings.

Flood Relief Center Flooded During Cleanup Efforts

The Linn County Civil Defense Department relief center flooded as city crews fought rising water with pumps and squeegees. Building maintenance man Ron Burmeister said it is the first time floodwater has entered the building in 19 years and mop-up will continue through the night.
