The FCC approved the merger of MCI Communications Corp and Telecom USA Inc, with MCI to acquire all Telecom stock at $42 per share totaling about 1.25 billion. Telecom is headquartered in Atlanta and employs 2,200 people in Cedar Rapids.

FDIC chair predicts up to 2 billion loss for fund

FDIC Chairman L William Seidman warned before the Senate Banking Committee that weakening real estate markets and a record pace of bank failures could push the Bank Insurance Fund to a possible 2 billion loss this year. The fund would drop to about 11 billion in assets, the lowest in its 57 year history, underscoring strain across the banking sector beyond the savings and loan industry. The Bank Insurance Fund insures 2.7 trillion in deposits at commercial banks and other insured depositories.
