Fuel policy amendment could empower President to set fuel prices
The plan would extend to March 4 1955 and direct allocation rules for gasoline heating oil and other petroleum products. It aims to account for public health defense farm operations and equitable shares for independent distributors while giving the President authority to fix prices and divert surpluses to independent dealers as needed. The Senate advocates argue the measure could reach the President quickly after a month recess. Opposition notes Nixon already has authority but favors mandatory rather than voluntary allocation.
