Layoffs begin for state workers in Iowa budget cycle
One month into fiscal 2002 more than 100 state employees received pink slips as eight departments cut 102 FTE positions. Three agencies – general services, revenue and finance, and human services – account for about two thirds of cuts. Gov Vilsack had ordered 910 positions eliminated or left vacant in the year to tighten the $4.9 billion budget. The restoration painter at General Services was rehired using unlimited appropriations to finish Capitol renovations.
