Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival Draws Thousands
The 12th Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival in Davenport drew about 6000 attendees at LeClaire Park despite 94 degree heat. Bands from across the country performed authentic 1920s jazz on land and aboard the Julien Dubuque excursion boat, with fans dancing, sun protection, and a family atmosphere highlighted by Beiderbecke descendants among the audience. The event featured eight bands, late night jam sessions, and remarks about Beiderbecke's enduring influence and Louis Armstrong's admiration.
