IE reports $22 million repair bill for nuclear plant
Cracks were found in 10 inch water recirculation pipes at the nuclear plant in June 1978. Repairs were not finished and the plant restarted in March this year. IE officials say the final repair bill is $22 million with IE share $15.4 million for 70 percent ownership. The rest is owned by Central Iowa Power Cooperative and Cornbelt Power Co-op. During shutdown IE bought $31 million in power from others, but $6 million would have been spent on outside power during normal refueling, leaving net outside power costs at $25 million.

IE cost findings shape Iowa Electric shutdown bill
The ICC case on IE recovery of purchased power places total shutdown costs at about 40.4 million. About 3 million covers power bought during the shutdown and 3 million for repairs. Independent lab results attribute pipe cracks to inter granular stress corrosion and a design flaw with no knowledge of hidden defects by IE. CIPCO manager Ed Williams notes the impact to ratepayers or stockholders is similar. IE officials plan rebuttals before the August 13 Des Moines hearing. CIPCO’s Williams disputes mismanagement.

Gallagher says liquor miles depend on who computes costs and envisions an agency system. It would extend service to towns with small stores and declining sales at half the state rent, shipping merchandise from Camp Dodge Des Moines to nearby liquor stores acting as mini-warehouses to supply participating retailers.
