Iowa Senate votes to move district courts to state agency
The Iowa Senate approved converting the county funded district court system into a state financed agency by a 38 to 7 vote, with transition to begin July 1 and finish by July 1987 if House changes pass. Critics questioned the projected 40 million cost and potential tax increases while supporters cited improved efficiency and end of open ended county funding. A $5 marriage license increase to 15 dollars raises about 135 thousand annually, earmarked partly for child abuse programs. Seven senators opposed final passage.
