Waukon student dies in Fayette motorcycle crash

Sherri Schwartzhoff 22 a senior at Upper Iowa University Fayette died Friday morning in a motorcycle accident near Fayette. New Chicago mayor vows big job cuts and reform

Harold Washington was sworn in as Chicago's first Black mayor promising to freeze hiring and fire appointees to tackle a $150 million general fund shortfall. He warned of $200 million deficits in school and transit budgets, pledging hundreds of last minute positions be eliminated and calling for salary cuts and a higher state income tax. He framed the crisis as Chicago’s worst since the 1871 fire.

Fort Dodge man killed in motorcycle collision

A 30-year-old Fort Dodge man named Jerry A. Smith died when his motorcycle was struck by a pickup crossing the centerline two miles north of Webster City. The driver Tracy Claude, 27, of rural Woolstock, was charged with failing to yield half the roadway. Smith was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene.
