Charge Is Weak Detective Tells Defense Reduced
A Marion man was convicted of the misdemeanor charge of assault and battery Tuesday in a trial where a detective said it would be wise to allow a guilty plea to the reduced charge. A Cedar Rapids detective admitted under cross-examination that he indicated the assault with intent to rape case was not very strong. The Linn district court verdict followed about three hours of deliberation before Judge James Carter and a jury of Cedar Rapids, Mt. Vernon, Marion, and Hiawatha residents. On this date in 1798, the U.S. navy department was created by an act of Congress.
