Amateur Iowa City artists win blue ribbons at Area 7 fair

Eleven blue ribbons were awarded in the Area 7 Amateur Iowa Artists competition at the Iowa City recreation center. Winners Ruth Ann Volesky, Rosemary Reid, Margaret Schopmeyer, and Eleanor Hyde from Cedar Rapids. Ruth Schmieder and Georgia Geiger from Amana. Roy Ferguson of Center Point. Ramona Jones of Williamsburg. Emma Lou Horn, Judy Nelson, and Phyllis Callahan of Iowa City will have their work entered in the state competition on May 10. A five ton load limit will be placed on Fifteenth Avenue SW from C Avenue to Fifth Street to curb heavy truck damage until paving, expected in about two months, with a detour via Eighth Avenue recommended.

Pre-Trial Hearing Closed in Cedar Rapids Murder Case

A closed pre-trial hearing was held in Linn district court Tuesday in the murder case of Johnny D. Lee White, charged with the February 1974 shooting death of Cedar Rapids auctioneer Donald Van Steenis. White, 30, is set for trial next Monday. County Atty. Eugene Kopecky said results likely won’t be public until after the trial to ensure fairness.

Protter opens fire in street near consulate in Jerusalem

The assailant wounded more than 30 during a lunchtime attack on the street below the consulate. Police seized floors, and Protter used walkie talkie ruses to feign accomplices demanding a helicopter and an El Al flight to Israel. He released three children and eight hostages before surrendering at 6:30 a.m.Authorities expected possible further arrests as the case unfolds.

Regents OK Larger Education Budget for 75 76 in Iowa

DES MOINES The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Education led by Rep. Wally Horn approved a $14 070 081 increase in the Iowa education budget for 1975 76. The measure excludes about $379 million for the public school foundation program and excludes salary raises for Regents faculty and staff and for Department of Public Instruction employees. The bill covers the educational agencies currently included.

Education budget figures in subcommittee vote

Budget advances base on 182 million appropriation excluding salaries. Committee raised to 196.22 million excluding salaries. On paper a governor pay plan would push education budget to 214.08 million, a 17.5 percent rise, but pay increases may be handled in a separate bill. Of 196.2 million, 137.16 million funds regent institutions, 48.78 million goes to public instruction and area schools, and 10.28 million funds other educational programs including 9 million for tuition grants and 750 thousand for osteopathic college in Des Moines. Attempts to add to the total were defeated in the subcommittee.

Three-year-old wanders off then found at police station

Chris Farr a three-year-old misled by a tale of candy wandered from home toward the southwest city. He was stopped at First Street and Eighth Avenue SW and taken to the police station where Lt. Bernhardt Kraus and Patrolman Joseph Shimek questioned him. The boy admitted his name as Chris Ford. His mother Becky Farr later arrived and identified him. The badminton racquet found at the station belonged to someone else.
