New Stocks Mark Time Amid Caution On Rates
Wall Street held a cautious tone as investors awaited signals on interest rates. The Dow rose 78 to 10,878 at 2 p.m. with a 3-2 edge of losers over gainers on the NYSE, while bond markets and potential tax deficits weighed on sentiment. Market activity remained subdued ahead of the securities industry shift to full price competition and anticipated lower commission costs.
