Extension Service Nixes Subsoil Moisture Sampling
Iowa State University extension service ends its subsoil moisture reporting for spring. Cedar Rapids crops specialist Jerry Gogan says eastern Iowa is near full capacity and only a few western locations are below. He notes moisture will be needed later for crops while tile drainage strains appear as broken systems fail to flow. Garren Benson and Robert Shaw from ISU say much of Iowa has excess moisture requiring drainage before fields can be worked.

Moisture reserves bode well for 1973 crop yields
Benson and Shaw say large moisture reserves suggest favorable 1973 yields though delayed planting has already cut oat potential. If rains continue, corn and soybean planting may lag beyond ideal dates of May 10 for corn and May 20 to 25 for soybeans. Late plantings likely reduce yields. Regional moisture differences could be important.
