Hubert H. Baker resigns as executive director of the Cedar Rapids Mental Health Center effective June 23 after serving since May 1953. A Detroit native, he will join Pennsylvania's welfare department as community mental coordinator. successor not yet named.
Algiers report says French troops killed 88 Algerians in two clashes on roads believed used by nationalists to move arms from Tunisia. The incidents occurred as French forces targeted suspected nationalist groups in the region.
Donald Sickles a 17 year old Manchester youth drew a suspended 10 year sentence to Anamosa reformatory on a forgery charge. Judge Floyd Phil brick paroled Sickles to the State Board of Parole. He pled guilty April 20 for cashing a forged 25.50 check in Central City April 6. A New Hampshire youth George E Bertrand, 20, faces sentencing Saturday on a breaking and entering charge after pleading guilty for breaking into a Cedar Rapids home on April 1 and taking 12.50 in change. Clifford McKinnley awarded 1162.37 in a promissory note suit against Marion C LaVelle. A 213.91 auto damage suit by Inez M Smith was dismissed Thursday. defendants were Jack Thews and Gladys Shelton.

Frank Ross Wingert 1639 First Avenue SE Cedar Rapids lifelong resident and retired printer died Thursday after a sudden illness. Born in Tipton he married Ethel Thomas on April 22 1908 in Cedar Rapids. Survived by wife a son Richard Wingert of Westport Conn and brothers Arthur Edgar and Herbert all of Cedar Rapids. He was a member of St Pauls Methodist Church Mt Hermon Lodge 263 AF and AM Iowa Consistory El Kabir Shrine and the Chamber of Commerce. Services 1 30 p.m. Saturday at Chapel of Memories conducted by Dr H Hughes Dill and Mt Hermon Lodge. Burial Cedar Memorial. Friends may call at Turner Chapel until 11 a.m. Saturday. Master Masons to meet at Masonic Hall at 1 p.m. to attend.
William Hume Cook 60 of 1006 Ellis boulevard NW Cedar Rapids died at Reinbeck following a sudden illness. Born March 20 1897 in Colby Kansas he was a Rock Island Railroad carpenter for 15 years and a Cedar Rapids resident 24 years. Survived by Lois wife Marie JoAnn daughter Charles W. Cook Cedar Rapids four sisters Eureka Kansas and one brother Eureka. Funeral 1 30 p m Monday at Linwood burial. Friends may call after 7 p m Saturday.
Albert E Red Slocum a World War I veteran and former light company employee died at 5 25 am Friday at Knoxville Veterans Hospital where he had been a patient since 1936 He was born October 12 1891 in Cedar Rapids and affiliated with United Brethren church He leaves a son Hubert L Slocum of 1852 Robbins Read NW and a brother Clyde E Slocum of Cedar Rapids His wife Margaret Dougherty Slocum died February 7 1915 They will have services announced later and friends may call at Rohn chapel Sunday
