Partly cloudy with scattered showers in Iowa and forecasts of warmer temperatures midweek. Outlook shows showers and thunderstorms Wednesday night ending Thursday morning, cooler thereafter. Public notices include toll road bill actions in Senate and House, birth and divorce announcements, and local service reminders across towns such as Iowa City, Dubuque, and Mt. Vernon.
Municipal Court Judge James Patterson announced the suspension of two licenses after guilty pleas. Richard Wolf of Iowa City received a 30 day suspension and a $100 fine for reckless driving. He also drew a 20 day suspension for speeding after an accident on Center Point Road NE. He appeared in court Tuesday.
Senator Hickenlooper faulted Senator George for suggesting talks with Red China without Nationalist China. He argued the Nationalists must be present at any conference, noting U.S. recognition of Chiang Kai-shek's sovereignty over Formosa and Congress authorizing forces to defend it.
The Lone Tree independent district will vote on a reorganization proposal May 10. The merger involves Fremont township all of Lincoln township most of Scott township about half of Pleasant Valley in Johnson county and about 15 sections of Oakland township in Louisa county.
The joint boards of education for Cedar Muscatine and Johnson counties overruled objections to the West Liberty school merger on Monday night. Objectors have 10 days to appeal before a sale date is set, as the merger includes part of the Attallissa district and marks the third hearing on the proposal.
President Eisenhower urged Republican congressional leaders on Tuesday to move forward with his 10 billion highway construction program.
Burt Neal 76 lifelong Mt Vernon resident and farmer died Monday in a Cedar Rapids hospital after a fall at his farm last Wednesday. Services are Thursday at 2 pm in the Presbyterian church with burial in Mt Vernon cemetery. Survivors include wife Essie Johnston two sons Willard and Gordon a daughter Mrs William Thomas a brother Ben and a sister Mrs Charles Wickham.
Henry Edward Rahe 70 of 1030 Fourth avenue SE died at home Tuesday after 20 years in Cedar Rapids. Born in New Vienna and previously in Dyersville, he worked for Armstrong's. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus Council 1734 and other local Catholic groups. Survived by wife Kathryn four daughters four sons 22 grandchildren and a brother. Funeral by Rt Rev Msgr William Schulte with burial at Mt Calvary cemetery.
Elizabeth Monaghan Miller 56 of 718 Ninth Street NW Cedar Rapids died in a Cedar Rapids hospital Monday. She was born February 11, 1899 in Kinross and a St. Joseph's Hospital Ottumwa graduate. Surviving: husband Laurence J. Miller. five children Robert Loras Maloney David Williams Mary Gerald in the Air Force Sacramento. eleven grandchildren. five sisters Rosalie Margaret Monaghan Catherine Alva Light Tucson and Mrs Vernon Butz and brother Larry San Bernardino. Services at St Patrick's church at 9 a.m. Thursday. friends may call Teahen chapel after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The Cedar Rapids resident aged 40 who died Sunday will have services at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Czech Evangelical and Reformed church conducted by Rev. Milo Filipi. Burial follows at the National cemetery in Vining. Friends may call at Janeba funeral home and contribute to the church fund if they wish.
Jennie Olson widow of Julius L. Olson of 229 Third Street NW Cedar Rapids died Monday. Services will be held at Turner chapel at 1 30 p m Wednesday with Rev D Keith Irwin of Olivet Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Linwood cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
Delaware County first and second grade pupils will receive polio shots Thursday and Friday at Manchester high school gymnasium. Schools will provide transport to the inoculation center under the Delaware County Medical Society and supervision of Nellie McLaren, Delaware County Memorial hospital administrator.
The Iowa legislature reports final action on a toll road bill with Senate concurrence after house amendments. A large appropriations package totaling 11.4 million dollars per year advances, including raises for top officials and a new governor office expense. Other actions cover auto title liability, truck enforcement shifts, and farm bureau separation debates with farm councils to be elected locally.
The Iowa Senate in executive session approved nominees including George Jeck to the State Conservation Commission and L. L. Caffrey to the State Board of Social Welfare. Also confirmed were Spaulding Miller and George Foerstner to the Public Employer Retirement System Advisory Investment Board and Leland Johnson Robertson Workman to the Board of Basic Science Examiners. Other confirmations were still doubtful, with Russell Lundy and Virginia Bedell awaiting decisions. Lundy was resubmitted after prior rejection.
Des Moines Iowa governor Hoegh would not comment on whether he will defy a senate rejection and name Dwight G Rider of Fort Dodge to the state board of education. Hoegh praised Riders service and leadership in education but declined further remark on the senate action.
Dr. Jonas Salk credited by army authorities with major contribution to influenza battle as director of a commission on influenza at Fort Dix. He led field studies from postwar through 1954 and helped develop effective vaccine combinations used across the armed forces. He continued polio research while serving the army.
Senator Knowland predicted speedy congressional approval of President Eisenhower’s plan to build an atomic powered merchant ship. He said the ship would begin promptly and visit foreign ports to demonstrate U S atomic medical, industrial and agricultural research.
Four civilians were killed and five injured in an explosion at the Navy's underwater ordnance station in Newport Rhode Island. The blast occurred during testing of torpedo heads caused by highly compressed air and fluid used in the test. About twenty workers were present in the building at the time.
David A. Kupka of Toledo Iowa was named president of Creighton University Young Republican club for 1955 56 in student balloting He was also nominated as delegate to the Nebraska state Republican convention in Lincoln May 29 30 31 and to the national convention in Detroit June 15 18
Thomas W. Sauerbry, 46, of Greeley, was found innocent after District Judge Floyd Philbrick directed a verdict mid afternoon Tuesday. The case stemmed from a June 13 incident east of Marion where prosecutors failed to prove driving while intoxicated beyond a reasonable doubt.
Three suits were dismissed by the plaintiffs on Monday and Tuesday. Cases involved are Coy versus Bebee for damages, Walcott versus Walcott for divorce, and Albright versus Achey Coon for landlord's attachment. George R. Uhl filed a suit Tuesday for $375.77 against Hobbs and Lee for car damage. Phoebe F. Heald filed for separate maintenance against Edwin E. Heald on Monday.
Iowa farmers report favorable seed bed prep for 1955 crops with 70 percent plowed by Monday, down from 80 percent a year earlier. Oat seeding finished, stands good after rains, and 8 percent of new clover and alfalfa seedings may be lost to winter kill. Pastures supply over one third of livestock forage, up from a year ago. Clover leaf weevil reported in scattered localities.
BONN AP The 1946 killing of three American officers in Germany is a closed case for U S occupation authorities. Knox Lamb general counsel of the U S High Commission said the file was sent to the justice department which found insufficient evidence to extradite former Army Captain James Leech of Lima Ohio for trial.
Providence AP reports a man fired for chronic tardiness was penalized six weeks by the department of employment security after filing for jobless benefits. He appealed to the board of review, which upheld the penalty, noting the man also arrived late to the hearing.
Iowa City report states William H. Grey of East Pleasant Plain Jefferson county died Monday night at University Hospitals from injuries in a two-car crash near Brighton on April 16. His wife Wyona Grey was killed in the same accident.
Mrs. Dale Rasmussen and her son William, 2, were hospitalized in Spencer Monday after an explosion while Mrs. Rasmussen was cleaning her husband’s trousers in the basement. Both are reported in good condition. Pvt. Milford C. White, 21, of Creston was killed in a traffic accident near Tuscumbia Missouri Sunday night while a Fort Leonard Wood soldier drove the car.
More than 100 women will take part in the Nevada nuclear test near ground zero to show safe precautions. About 75 women will observe at News Nob seven miles away, with civil defense groups and national women’s organizations represented. Another 25 will prepare breakfast for test participants at News Noir, demonstrating emergency feeding. Oveta Culp Hobby, then HEW secretary, is among the observers.

Washington, UP. The administration halted its push for authority to draft youths into a modified universal military training program. Defense Secretary Wilson told the House committee the bill could go forward without the draft power, which the panel previously removed, effectively ending that avenue for now. The plan backs 100,000 to 250,000 volunteers aged 17 and 18 in a six month UMT like course, then seven and a half years in ready reserves. The administration had sought power to draft 19 year olds if needed.
President Eisenhower proclaimed next Sunday as Child Health Day urging citizens to observe in worship and elsewhere to emphasize abundant health for all children. The occasion, set by Congress since 1928, gains meaning this year with the Salk polio vaccine announced for protecting children from poliomyelitis.
