The Cedar Rapids Gazette recalls the 38th anniversary of Company C First Regiment Iowa National Guard departing for Des Moines en route to the Spanish American War. The April 26 1898 report describes a large send off with soldiers, crowds, and tearful farewells at the station in a scene of civic pride.
A full grown male silver fox, valued for fur, was shot Saturday morning by Leonard Trachta six miles northeast of here after the animal invaded his chicken yard. He chased it to the house and fired, possibly the same fox seen earlier on Wildwood and Elmhurst drives NE near Mound Farm.
Donald DeFore of Cedar Rapids a Pasadena Community Playhouse student has been cast as Canada in Queen Victoria at the Pasadena Playhouse. His prior work includes Noah Hedda Gabler and Redemption. He plans to join the midsummer festival after graduation in June before a Cedar Rapids vacation.
Chief of Police Robert Vlach urged bicycle riders to equip lights and reflectors after complaints of unlit bikes on night streets. He cited a fatal early-year accident and warned against riding in groups to prevent further deaths and accidents.
Linn county contributions to the American Red Cross flood relief fund total 2240.99 dollars as of Saturday. The county quota was 1305 dollars. Among gifts noted were 22 dollars from Metropolitan Life Insurance employees and 140 dollars from Franklin junior high pupils.
