Iowa FFA convention grants 211 members the Iowa Farmer Degree

At Cedar Rapids state FFA convention the Iowa Farmer Degree was conferred on 211 members selected from 315 applicants across 141 vocational agriculture departments. Among honorees, Jerry Vincent of West Branch became the fourth in his family to receive the degree, with brothers Bruce Dale and Keith previously honored. The list includes numerous recipients from towns statewide, highlighting the graduation of high schoolers into the organization’s top honor.

Plager Resigns As Nat l Barrow Superintendent

AUSTIN Minn Carroll Plager longtime superintendent of the National Barrow show since 1946 moves to a supervisory show manager role. Dalton Shaw will succeed him as superintendent. Both are with Hormel Co livestock extension. Plager joined Hormel in 1931, helped develop grade and yield marketing, became livestock extension manager in 1945 and Barrow show superintendent in 1946. Shaw, a 1959 BS graduate from South Dakota State, joined Hormel soon after.

Hog Trading Ends May 15 at Chicago Yards

The Union Stock Yard and Transit Co announces that hog trading will end May 15 at the Chicago stockyards, long the nation's hog marketing hub. Cattle and sheep trading will continue. Declining receipts and rising costs drive the closure plan. The firm runs a market in Atkinson, Kansas, on Interstate 80 about 140 miles west of Chicago.

Zumbach Brothers Shine At Iowa FFA Speech Contest

Manchester's Steve Zumbach, first Iowa national FFA officer since the 1950s, receives ovation at state convention. His brother Mark wins gold emblem in state extemporaneous speaking. Dennis Dammen of Osage earns regional bid. Awards go to many in freshmen creed and public speaking events across multiple towns.

Linn F B Women Plan Chicago Tour

Linn County Farm Bureau women will tour Chicago for three days from April 28 to 30. Reservations are through the Marion office with Mrs Ralph Williams. Planned visits include the Museum of Science and Industry the Merchandise Mart the Historical Society Old Town Chinatown Frank Lloyd Wright home and the Celeste Holm play Time of the Cuckoo.
