Extended forecast calls for near normal temperatures across Iowa Sunday through Tuesday with a chance of rain Sunday. Highs mid 60s statewide, overnight lows 38 to 42. Barometer 29.82, humidity 21 percent, wind WNW at 22 mph. Gazette weather data also notes sunrise at 5 13 and sunset at 6 58.
The house met as a committee of the whole on the second day of work drafting a state tax increase and school aid bill. Four non controversial bills passed. Debates resumed on a merit system abolition for state employees in five departments. A tornado near Florence Alabama killed a woman in her 20s and injured her husband as fallen trees blocked roads and damaged homes and barns. Merle A Hall 75 of 2721 Lindale Ave NE Cedar Rapids died Friday after a short illness. A Cedar Rapids resident 15 years, he was born Feb 21 1896 in Oxford Junction and married Lida Coon Nov 1 1918 in Marion. He served in WWI with the U S Army Corps of Engineers and was a longtime county and Cedar County engineer before leading Hall and Hall Engineers Inc for 18 years. He held church and fraternal memberships and is survived by his wife two sons a daughter two brothers a sister and 15 grandchildren. West Branch city council took no action on a permit request for an anti war demonstration on May 1. Mike Murphy a University of Iowa student representing Veterans Against the War in Vietnam said about 15 people would take part. He said the protest had no link to Iowa City events. Mayor Thomas noted the city wants no trouble and would handle any problems. Murphy said West Branch was the first town contacted by the group.
Lawmakers debated a broad school aid reform package in Iowa, proposing a 1 percent sales tax hike to fund districts and a base 27.5 mill property tax. An amendment by Rep. Lipsky to freeze property taxes for seniors 65 plus earning under 6000 a year passed, while other proposals to consolidate districts and alter the uniform levy were defeated amid rural urban splits. Municipal utilities were included in district assessments though they keep tax exemptions.
Washington AP report says the Senate Armed Services Committee approved by voice vote a House passed provision granting President Nixon authority to end draft deferments for college students. The move increases student draft exposure as part of broader wartime policy actions.
Prof. Robert Fellinger of Iowa State, chair of the Athletic Council, said the arbitration outcome was expected after the Grid Series conflict. He expressed regret that the agreement could not be worked out between the two boards and noted the matter went to arbitration “down to the wire.”
Cedar Rapids man accuses Mt Calvary Cemetery Assn of dumping rubbish into Indian Creek including pots flowers and bags. Cemetery officials deny any dumping, citing a distant rubbish pile and possible upstream sources. Water pollution control will investigate the complaint.
Streets Commissioner Richard Phillips announced that all oiling petitions for alleys must be submitted to the public works department by May 20. Petitions are available at the public works department during regular business hours.
